Decent place to spend Christmas
We had a pleasant two-night stay here over Christmas. I was a bit worried by some of the reviews, but I needn’t have been. It was the most expensive place we stayed at in Sri Lanka, but we were happy to pay for the experience we had. The hotel itself is a decent size, it doesn’t feel too big, and it has a good-sized, well-kept pool that I enjoyed swimming in many times. The pool was generally fairly quiet (although not always - see my negative points), and there were times when we had it all to ourselves. The room was comfortable, with a nice bed, a strong shower, good AC, and a kettle with tea and coffee that was replenished daily. Mosquitos were not a problem! The hotel has its own private access to the (public) beach, with eight sun loungers for hotel guests on the sand at the point that the private path meets the beach. The beach itself is very pretty, but note that the water is very shallow and, at least when we were there, the waves were quite rough, so it was not possible to swim in the ocean. It was easy to walk to other restaurants along the beach front. There was a nice mix of Sri Lankan guests and foreigners. However, it was Christmas, and so perhaps this wasn’t usual.
Once or twice, in the evenings, a bit of a party atmosphere arose down by the pool, with loud music and fairly loud guests. We stayed in our room when this happened - it wouldn’t have been nice to go for a swim. We ate lunch from the à la carte menu at the hotel’s restaurant, after we checked out, and the experience was quite disappointing. The food was relatively expensive, took over an hour to come, and the portions were very small, and unfortunately it was not very tasty – my grilled prawns for instance were very dry, and moreover, what came was not exactly what was listed on the menu (different sauce and vegetables). Dogs – One evening we ventured out of the hotel to try and find a restaurant on one of the nearby roads, but it was a scary experience – there was no street lighting, and there were many stray dogs, some of which would bark at us aggressively. Subsequently, we would only walk along the beach at dark, not the roads (although the beach has its own stray dogs). Occasionally there were stray dogs in the grounds of the hotel, too. The AC broke once, but the staff fixed it in fairly short order.
